Season Extension: Hoop Houses, Low Tunnels and Cold Frames
Learn a range of proven techniques to extend the traditional growing season through winter in the Upper Midwest. The first half of the workshop will focus on methods appropriate to small-scale farming—including low tunnels, cold frames, straw cover, and row cover/bed sheets—used at Badger Rock Urban Farm.
For larger-scale operations, hoop houses have successfully served as lower-cost alternatives to permanent greenhouses. The workshop’s second half will cover a hoop house construction method using easily available materials, and review common approaches for growing a variety of produce throughout much of the year.
